Don't Forget the Fats.........
January 08, 2012 @ 3:52:27 PM EST

Last night My wife and I were invited out for a dinner of Lobster and Crab! While these are basically no carbs in and of themselves, the condiments they are served with are Very high in Fats and Cholesteral! A lot of times we think of the main course when carb counting and not of the preparation and serving flavorings! Although these item may not be additonal carbs or sugars we must remember the link between High Cholesteral  and Diabetes.

High cholesteral translates into higher blood sugar and Shell Fish, although it is protein, it is very high in Cholestera. The serving additions, Butter Etc are very high in Fats and LDL Cholesteral or the bad Cholesteral! So beware!!!!

New Year New Attitude........
January 05, 2012 @ 2:07:50 PM EST

Well the year is over and we are still here and so is our diabetes. Were you good over the holidays? I know I overindulged a little and had to take some extra insulin! But it is a new year and I will try my best to keep my bloodsugar in check. I know I have to get a tighter reign on it or it is going to kill me. I am usually the biggest offender on my eating!

I tend to over eat or to indulge in sweets then think 'I can just take more insulin'. That is not the way. I am suffering now for it. I have peripheral neuropathy and diabetic cranial neuropathy and I had to have laser surgery done on my eye to stop bleeding into the vitreous fluid due to my diabetes. I know I have to work harder at control!

Help me try?

Thanks.

One more holiday to come!!
December 30, 2011 @ 7:39:39 PM EST

Well Thanksgiving and Christmas are gone and only one more Holiday is left, New Years Eve and Day! This is usually a bad time for drinking alcohol! In case you didn't know, alcohol is not good for diabetics. It can lower blood sugar levels, interacting with blood sugar medicines! I always thought that alcohol increased blood sugar but I was wrong! The blood sugar is lowered. If you take Glocophage (Metformin) this can lead to a condition called lactic acidosos which is very dangereous. If yo drink sweet wines or liquers, they add sugars and this is also bad.

If you must drink, always eat while drinking, sip or drink slowly so your alcohol can be metabolized. Dry wines and light beers are best. Also, don't forget that the alcohol causes altered mental effect and you may not take you med correctly or may over indulge on food, alcohol or sugary substances (poor diabetic control).

Stay healthy,

Hints on holiday carbs......
December 12, 2011 @ 4:34:54 AM EST

I thought this week I would List a few holiday Products and the Carbs they contain:

First we have Holiday Fruitcake this is 134 Calories and 34 Carbs for a 2 oz portion. Candied Yams 1/2 cup or 5 ozs 170 Calories and 46 Carbs. Sweet Potato 1/2 cup or 3 1/2 ozs 90 Calories and 24 Carbs. Baked Beans 1/2 cup or 4 1/2 ozs 120 Calories and 27 Carbs. Sweet Corn 1/2 cup or 3 ozs 77 Calories and 18 Carbs. Stay away from Raw Chick Peas 1 cup or 7 ozs 730 Calories and 121 Carbs. Try Green Beans or Snap Peas only 20 Calories and  4 carbs. Cheesecake 5 oz 395 Calories and 44 Carbs. (Cheesecake Factory Slice 630 Calories and 53 Carbs).

So it is better to stick with the Green or leafy Veggies and stay away from the rest of the veggies and cut out the desserts!

Holiday diets.........
November 27, 2011 @ 4:55:35 AM EST

It has been a little while since my last blog and the holidays have begun to creep up on us! This is a bad time of the year for us diabetics. I don't know about you but I get kind of jealous of everyone.....eating their cakes, pies,  pastries and candies!! At least these days there are many Sugar Free Candies and most bakeries have at least Sugar Free Pies. So now we have to talk about Over-indulging in foods!!!

If you count carbs remmber you targets and stick to them, if you finger stick and give yourself insulin, keep on top of it!! My Great Grandmother was a diabetic when it was not so in fashion to be one and she stuck to her diet every day of her life. That is how we have to be, steadfast in our diet and meds!!

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

  Monitoring Fetal Heart Using Bluetooth
Checking the heart of the unborn baby usually involves a stethoscope. However, an inexpensive and accurate Bluetooth fetal heart rate monitoring system has now been developed by researchers in India for long-term home care. Details are reported in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Computers in Healthcare. Vijay Chourasia of the LNM Institute of Information Technology in Jaipur and Anil Kumar Tiwari of the Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan, in Jodhpur, explain how fetal phonocardiography is the modern equivalent of the stethoscope in ante-natal baby care...

Personal Genetic Test Results Have Not Driven Overuse Of Expensive Medical Care
People have more and more chances to participate in genetic testing that can indicate their range of risk for developing a disease.
